Sickleholme Golf Club – Winter Heritage Series
This winter, we’re excited to share a series of short historical clips celebrating the rich heritage of Sickleholme Golf Club. Each week, we’ll highlight a key moment from the club’s past, showcasing the people, places, and stories that have shaped Sickleholme into the course we know today.

This week’s feature:

The Opening of the 18 Holes (1925)

A landmark moment in Sickleholme’s history, the full 18-hole course officially opened in July 1925 following redevelopment influenced by the legendary Harry Colt and his design associate John Morrison. This transformation established much of the layout and character that golfers still enjoy nearly a century later.

To celebrate the opening of Sickleholme’s newly completed 18-hole course on 18th July 1925, the club hosted a spectacular exhibition match featuring four of the biggest golfing figures of the era:

  • Abe Mitchell – one of Britain’s finest professionals and the model for the Ryder Cup trophy

  • Harry Walker – renowned club professional and exhibition player

  • Archie Compston – leading British golfer and Ryder Cup star

  • George Duncan – Open Champion (1920) and legendary competitor

Their appearance marked a truly historic moment for the club, showcasing the significance of the new Colt-influenced layout and placing Sickleholme firmly on the national golfing map.

More heritage stories will follow throughout the winter as we continue to explore the remarkable history of Sickleholme Golf Club.

Stay tuned each week as we take a step back in time and bring Sickleholme’s story to life.
