How to Rake a Bunker Correctly

  1. Enter the bunker from the low side

    • Always use the lowest point or flat area to step in—this helps avoid damaging the bunker edges.

  2. Play your shot

    • Play the shot first, then pick up the rake and get to work!

  3. Start raking from where the ball was

    • Begin by smoothing the area where you took your stance, then work your way back to your exit point.

  4. Rake in a consistent back-and-forth motion

    • Use the flat side of the rake if available.

    • Smooth out footprints, club marks, and the divot from your shot.

    • Avoid creating ridges or deep furrows.

  5. Rake your path out

    • Don’t just fix the shot area—rake where you walked as you exit the bunker.

    • Try to leave the surface as flat and even as possible.

  6. Exit the bunker the same way you entered (low side)

    • Step out gently to avoid collapsing bunker edges.

  7. Place the rake properly

Pro Tips

  • Be thorough but efficient—don’t hold up play.

  • Help rake others’ footprints if they forget; it’s good etiquette.

  • If the bunker is wet or compacted, do your best to smooth it as evenly as possible.
